TITLE: Radiochemist

TPI seeks to support revolutionary radiotherapies for treatments of cancers, such as prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma by supplying radioisotopes that currently cannot be accessed in amounts required to develop medical treatments. The Radiochemist will support TPI’s efforts toward the long-term production of actinium-225. The Radiochemist reports into the Materials & Chemistry discipline within TerraPower’s Engineering Department in support of this mission.

The Radiochemist will support ongoing and future radiochemical production activities by leading production operations including planning, preparation, execution of radiochemical processes and quality control. The Radiochemist will work with the broader TPI team on radiochemical process and experiment design, and lead continuous improvement of processes and operations. The Radiochemist will be part of a radiochemical production team supporting daily radiochemical process operations, production documentation and troubleshooting.

This position interfaces with a dynamic interdisciplinary environment in which effective communication, teamwork and collaboration is required, while maintaining composure to act safely, ensure quality of data, and enable timely decision-making. The position will require good judgement in ensuring regulatory compliance while delivering on commercial production needs. The candidate should have demonstrated laboratory capabilities in radiochemical separations, experimental design and handling and transfer of radioactive materials. The ideal candidate will have experience performing both bench-top R&D and relevant manipulator-based radiochemical separations in hot-cell and glovebox environments. The Radiochemist reports into the Materials & Chemistry discipline within TerraPower’s Engineering Department.


The Radiochemist’s primary responsibilities include:
  • Perform and support hands-on manufacturing of radioisotopes (in hot cells and gloveboxes), following standard operating procedures (SOPs) and batch records.
  • Support preparation of documentation for product batch records.
  • Support preparation of materials and stock solutions to enable production.
  • Support maintenance of material and supply inventories required for process operations and procurement/replenishment as needed to ensure smooth operations.
  • Support documentation of process operations as directed by SOPs.
  • Develop and maintain laboratory procedures (e.g., calibration, analytical methods, notebook results preparation, usage documentation).
  • Conduct radiochemistry experiments to support design, scale-up, start-up and ongoing production of radioisotope manufacturing processes and advanced nuclear reactor systems.
  • Liaise and collaborate with TPI Quality Assurance (QA), TPI Operations groups, and broader Materials & Chemistry team to support production planning, issue-resolution, audits, inspection, sample QA, out-of-specification investigations, corrective action program reports resolution, etc.
  • Assist in hands-on training and transfer of institutional knowledge to new team-members and other members of TerraPower team.
  • Emphasize safety in new and existing design and safe practices in all experimental activities
  • Perform other general duties associated with the position as required.
  • Perform all work in compliance with site safety and radiation protection guidelines, including effective teamwork and communication with health physicists, authorized users and RSO.

Key Qualifications and Skills
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree with 3-5 years professional experience, a Master’s degree with minimum 2-3 years experience, or a doctoral level (PhD) degree in chemistry or radiochemistry, with demonstrated hands-on relevant radiochemical laboratory experience in radiochemical separations, and radiochemical synthesis.
  • Proficiency and experience in the handling of radioactive materials.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working according to safety procedures in a hazardous environment (chemical and radiological).
  • Experience working and communicating productively in a multidisciplinary team including R&D, production, quality assurance, and engineering design functions.
  • Experience in radiochemical characterization methods including gamma spectroscopy, ICP-OES, and ICP-MS in addition to other common laboratory analytical techniques is a plus.
  • Ability to understand requirements (regulations, codes and standards, etc.), incorporate them into TerraPower documents, and provide associated guidance to TerraPower personnel.
  • Experience working and communicating productively in a multidisciplinary team to meet production goals and commitments.
  • Flexibility to work periodic off-shift hours in support of routine production.
  • Commitment to maintaining integrity of operations and documentation through strict adherence to SOPs.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills with a desire to foster teamwork within a diverse team focused on achieving TerraPower mission.
