Job Description
We are seeking a visionary Co-Founder and Principal Investigator with a strong background in the chemical sciences to lead and shape our research initiatives on novel surface coating technologies. The successful candidate will play a key role in the strategic direction and growth of the company, collaborating closely with distinguished professors serving as consultants. This role involves leading research engagement with university partners or a contracted lab, securing funding, and engaging with potential investors. This will be a remote position with travel expected for specific business needs or events as required.

Key Responsibilities

• Strategic Leadership: Work closely with other co-founders to define the company's strategic direction, vision, and goals, particularly in the development of novel surface coating technologies.
• Research Oversight: Lead and oversee research projects, ensuring alignment with the company’s mission. Collaborate with distinguished professors to determine prototype development processes and integrate academic insights with practical applications.
• Funding and Grant Management: Identify funding opportunities, assist in writing grant proposals, and manage relationships with grant providers. Secure necessary resources to advance research and development efforts.
• Prototype Development: Oversee the development of prototypes, working with engineers and technical staff to translate research into viable products.
• Testing and Analysis: Collaborate with engineers to establish testing protocols. Analyze test results to optimize coating formulations and processes.
• Investor Relations: Act as a key point of contact for potential investors, articulating the technology’s value proposition and the company’s vision. Prepare presentations and technical documentation to support funding initiatives.
• Team Building and Mentorship: Help build and mentor a team of researchers, graduate students, and lab technicians. Foster a collaborative and innovative research environment.
• Compliance and Safety: Ensure all research activities adhere to safety regulations and maintain a compliant and safe working environment.

Requirements

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
• Entrepreneurial mindset with a passion for innovation and a desire to drive the company’s mission forward.
• In-depth knowledge of surface chemistry, materials characterization techniques, and coating processes.
• Knowledge of polymer science and nanotechnology as they relate to surface coatings.
• Experience in grant writing and interfacing with funding agencies.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively and strategically.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

Preferred Skills

• Minimum of 3 years of postdoctoral or industry experience in surface coatings, materials science, or a related area.
• Proven track record of leading successful research projects, with strong project management and leadership skills.
• Previous experience as a co-founder or in a senior leadership role within a startup.
• Experience in industrial or commercial research settings.
• Experience in scaling up lab-scale research to pilot or commercial-scale production.
• Understanding of regulatory requirements and environmental considerations for coating materials.
• Experience in mentoring and developing research staff.
