Description

The High-speed Aerodynamics and Propulsion Laboratory at the University of Maryland, College Park has an open post-doctoral position in high-altitude (~100 kft) flow measurements. The position will
involve flying measurement payloads on sounding- and zero-pressure-balloon platforms, with instrumentation that may include hot- and cold-wire probes, microphones, aerosol samplers, and
particulate counters. The applicant will be expected to calibrate and test the instruments, integrate the instrumentation payload with the flight platform (with some design and development work possibly
required), plan and execute launches (in a supervisory role as part of a launch team), analyze the gathered data, and summarize it in reports and scholarly publications.
The appointment will be in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, full-time, for at least one year, with the possibility of renewals pending satisfactory performance and funding. Remuneration will be competitive and based on qualifications.
The expected start date is July 2021.

Requirements

Applicants are expected to have:
- a Ph.D. in Engineering, Physics, Atmospheric Sciences, or a related field;
- proficiency with experimental fluid dynamic techniques, and preferably experience in velocity, temperature, acoustic, and/or particulate measurements (experience with high-altitude ballooning is highly desirable);
- a track record of scholarly research;
- the ability to work with and supervise a team comprising undergraduate and graduate students, and interact with government researchers.
